I like experimenting with Andrew Loomis's Informal Subdivision technique for creating weird/frustrating compositions. You start with diagonal and straight lines that bisect your canvas at random areas. Making sure not to create asymmetrical or usual bisects, meaning don't divide it in the middle and don't use rule of thirds.  It's a bit hard fitting things in there but you can come up with some fun stuff.
