Masterchef Retouch by MR KSB

One can’t help become a bit hungry, while retouch photos for a renown show like Masterchef. I hope you’ll enjoy the result as much as I did retouching them.

Danish television company Viasat, was set to launch a new season of Masterchef, on their channel TV3. They needed something out of the ordinary to promote their new season.

Viasat approached my client photographer Lars E. Andreasen, with a wish for a 4 page advert + 12 press portrait shots of the contestants.

We collaborated on the idea for the shot, and I was responsible for retouching and to photo manipulate the look and feel for the campaign and the 12 press photos.

The final retouch campaign photos were used both online and in traditional media. They were featured in leading Danish magazines and newspapers like “Se og Hør“, “Ekstra Bladet” and “MX, Metroexpress”.

It was a great joy to be part of creating the look & feel of this campaign, and especially to use new technologies in a creative way that really benefited the client.

The technology behind the retouch
A project of this magnitude needs a plan and a good setup, so I decided to make use of a new technology in Photoshop CC, called Linked Smart Objects.
The 4 page campaign retouch, consist of a total of 19 separate photos combined to make the final composition possible.

By using linked smart objects, I’m provided with a more flexible workflow, where one can work with every element as a single Photoshop file, and combine them for the final montage. You can even reuse the independent elements for other projects, saving you precious hard drive space. For instance, I reused the background in two separate project files.

Another benefit I really appreciate, is that Photoshop uses less time for every project save, since much of the data is contained within separate PSD files - especially beneficial if you have a non-destructively workflow.

In addition, when using linked smart objects, every element and model can be rearranged easily if the client wants changes to the composition, without having to redo all the effects. With years of experience of working non-destructively in Photoshop, linked smart objects is a true game changer for me.

This setup made it possible to work with every element as a standalone Photoshop file, and combine them for the final montage. Since the old smart objects used a temporary workspace instead of standalone files, any application crash while updating the project canvas meant you potentially lost part of your work. The new smart objects help me create a more stable environment.

Instead of having all elements in one huge file, which could have been 6GB, the project file itself only was 0.6 GB at a size of 14000x3500 pixels for a 2 page spread advert.
Tl;dr linked smart objects save precious space and time!
