Santa Monica Place
My Role:
Creative direction, Concept Design, Project Management, Fabrication Observation
Santa Monica Place takes advantage of the City’s vibrant public spirit by connecting to the urban fabric of the city along the four elevations. These included drawing elements of the surrounding neighborhoods into the project with four distinct entry plazas representing the varying inspirations of the site – Third Street Promenade and its intimate pedestrian scale to the north (Broadway); the ocean to the west (2nd Street); the Civic Center to the south (Colorado); and urban Los Angeles to the east (4th Street). As a critical component to the design, on both Broadway and Colorado Avenue, the spacious entryways to the new Third Street extension form a direct connection between the Promenade and the Civic Center, linking the entire district to establish a vibrant new urban corridor.
Our scope included Environmental Graphics and design for common area amenities for the complete site. One of the primary objectives was to provide identity and wayfinding elements for the project that would engage and guide visitors throughout the center, its retail offerings and ultimately up to the third level dining deck. At the pedestrian entries on Broadway and 4th street, visitors are greeted by curved and sloping, stainless steel walls that feel as if they’ve been eroded by tide and time. The dining opportunities on the 3rd level deck are presented at each pedestrian entrance with elegant typography on freestanding pylons. Illuminated directories throughout the site are fitted with glowing edges that correspond to level colors.

The Market offers a one-of-a-kind food experience that is unique to its signature setting. These culinary entrepreneurs will provide a memorable and rich set of tastes, sips, gifts and even cooking classes. As a collection of organic, artisanal and gourmet food and gifts, the Market at Santa Monica Place strives to offer a curated menu of food experiences that fits with the way people in Santa Monica live today. My role was to create a program of authentic branded elements to layer into the built space.
