CATservation
Magazine Layout/Editorial Design, 12 pages
CATservation is a demonstration of my skills in editorial and magazine layout design, as well as being able to take a “printed” design and adapting it for an interactive digital layout. The goal of this project was to create a concept for a magazine. After creating a printed version of the magazine, I then took it and created an interactive iPad version.

For my theme, I decided to create a magazine that would bring awareness to the conservation of big cats since that is something I am very passionate about. I gave it the title CATservation for the fitting combination of the words “cat” and “conservation.”

At the beginning of the project, I created mood boards composed of typography and editorial design layouts that would serve as inspiration for when I designed my own magazine’s spreads. Once I knew that I wanted my magazine’s subject to be big cats, I researched for five articles relating to big cat conservation to use in the magazine. I then gathered photos based off of the articles to use in their respective spreads. One of the snow leopard photos and a few of the tiger photos used are my own photographs, but the majority of photos are from either stock photography websites or from a featured individual or organization's website (as was the case with the Lion Whisperer article).

For the magazine’s cover, I created a vector illustration of a tiger in Illustrator. You can see the illustration itself below. Additionally, I used the background texture of the illustration throughout the magazine so that the spreads would (for the most part) have a consistent style that would reflect back on the cover.

For the iPad version of CATservation, each magazine spread (and the front and back covers) had to have its own InDesign file. The good thing about designing magazines for the iPad is that you have more room for each spread. I wasn’t limited to just 12 “pages” like I was with the printed version. I was able to include more photos, as well as interactive elements such as photo galleries, videos, and links to big cat organization websites while also giving each article itself more breathing room. You can view the mock-up video of the iPad version of the magazine below:

In addition, I designed a full-page advertisement to include on the back of the magazine. I had a list of topics that I could choose from. While none of them really fit my magazine’s genre, I ended up going with an advertisement for a Celtic festival.
NOTE: CATservation is considered a personal project. It is in no way officially associated with any of the organizations mentioned in the magazine's articles.
