Los Colores de México

Final Project: Massey University Diploma in Fashion and Design
Los Colores de Mexico is a women's wear collection I designed as part of completing a Diploma in Fashion and Design in 2009. I was required to design a full collection and to patternmake and construct two outfits from this collection.

I was inspired by the traditional garments of Mexico and how they have changed during its rich history. The clothes needed to to reflect older indigenous styles as well as the more modern Spanish influence. This involved researching extensively into Mexican textiles looking at what fibres are predominately used, weaves, dyeing methods, and embellishment techniques such as embroidery.

Tiered Dress: This dress is made from 100% cotton. All the layers of fabric have a different texture to them. The belt is hand embroidered and the necklace is made from bones in a nod to the 'day of the dead' festival.
Embroidered Dress: This dress is also 100% cotton. The cut is based on Mexican puebla blouses and the embroidery inspired by Aztec and Mayan motifs. Machine/hand embroidered.
Mariachi Jacket: This jacket was heavily inspired by the outfits worn by Mariachi bands. It is 100% silk.
