Thesis Project at IIT Bombay
Thesis, IIT Bombay
The project aimed at designing products for a pre school/ nursery classroom environment with children of 2-5 years of age. The project was an effort to relieve the stress of today’s pre school education and bring in more of the fun element to the classroom. I tried to keep it all fun for the kids, on the surface, but with underlying objectives of balanced development, increased social interaction, experiential learning and creative development.

Concept 1: Mobile seating for the ever so dynamic and full of energy kids.  The seat can be used to revolve around  or connect them and make a train, it is all left to the children how they use it..

Concept 2: Animal prints footwear has been designed to encourage role playing and interaction among kids. The footwear has vanishing ink on the sole which evaporates in a few seconds making it magical for the kids.

Concept 3: The device is used to project images on the ceiling and on the wall using a pre fed film, attracting attention, provoking curiosity, blocking distractions and leaving them to just one source of pure magic.

Form Development:
The forms being worked upon were inspired from animals, so that they are recognizable for the kids. They love to have ‘Mr. Fatty’ or ‘Ms. Fishie’ in their toys.

Contraption:
The workability of the concept was tested using a film and an LED light source. The resultant was a 4’ X 4’ sharp image on the wall

The final product  was a 5’ X 7’ teaching device with a film roll containing 36 images, which could be images of a fairy tale (eg. Cinderella), animals, alphabets or even stop motion images! The images changed as the user rotated the star. The device could be used with changeable film roll discs. The prototype was working with a 1 watt LED source, a battery, two lenses and a heat sink. A lever was provided on the side to shift from ceiling to wall projection or vice versa. The principle is so simple that it can be launched in the market easily for INR 20!

The product was then taken to the surveyed schools for feedback and to my surprise, they loved it! The reaction of the kids made it all worthwhile. They were so excited and curious about it. When the lights were put out, the kids sat down and gazed with awe at the projections. There was snatching and pulling as to who gets to use it first. The teachers appreciated it too. ‘It is a novel change to the books and the blackboards, which we would love to use’, Ms Deepa, from Kidzee, Mumbai said.

The Final Design:
The final design was a slim bag with neon blue lines moving along the the bag like those on a PC circuit board. These lines continued on one of the handles as well. The pockets broke away from the usual and had asymmetrical forms running from one side to another breakfree. The front had a detachable sling, lunch pouch secured on the bag with the help of three velcros. The zipper was uniquely put at the extreme end making it almost hidden. On a whole the bag sat smartly on the shoulders with crisp blue lines depicting dynamism, fluidity and energy, apt for the youth in India.

Initial brainstorming
The key issue addressed in this project was the problems faced due to limited power shedding in a household. Also, the ratio of the number of light sources to the number of users and their lighting needs like study, ambient and torch lighting requirements.
