      This set of nine vases are based on the Japanese technique of kintsukuroi, which suggests that when an object is broken, it can be reassembled stronger and more beautifully. The visible seams and cracks of a reassembled artifact reflect its rich history and spirit. Rather than being hidden, gold is used as a binding agent so that imperfections are emphasized and celebrated. 

      In this project, nine bulbous, hexagonal vases are digitally modeled and shattered using video game physics software. The pieces are partially reassembled with gold trace geometry that fill gaps between adjacent pieces while developing autonomous tectonics that inhabit the spaces left behind by strategic deletions. Using the cracks as a starting point, the gold geometry begins to grow inwards to inhabit the interior space. Each vase will be 3d printed and cast in porcelain.
