Seeds - an audio visual installation
‘I switched on the news one night while I was having a break from writing, and there was a very old woman’s face in Srebrenica just weeping and looking into the camera and saying – “please, please, somebody help us”. I thought this is absolutely terrible and I’m writing this ridiculous play about two people in a room. I thought what could possibly be the connection between a common rape in a Leeds hotel room and what’s happening in Bosnia? And suddenly the penny dropped and I thought of course it’s obvious, one is the seed and the other is the tree. I do think the seeds of full-scale war can always be found in peace-time civilization.’ - Sarah Kane

Sarah Kane found inspiration for her debut play Blasted in the atrocities being committed in the Bosnian War. She found the media’s wilful ignorance of the ‘social sicknesses’ of Europe abhorrent. Twenty years later the situation has not changed – we still only see and hear what the media deems to be exciting enough to sell papers and keep viewer’s attention.

Whilst working as the assistant director on The Other Room's production of Blasted  I was inspired in turn by Kane. As such I have been attending Oasis Refugee Centre in Splott, Cardiff. Here people from all over the world can find a place of safety and support. As part of their comprehensive programme of activities drama workshops are used to improve English language skills and employability.

During my life changing expereince of volunteering in Ghana earlier this year I realised that the most powerful tool you can give some one is the knowledge of how to use their voice. This knowledge can give a person the power to change their world.

Here you can find some of the stories I collected in the workshops at Oasis presented alongside abstract portraits of the speakers.

Despite the atrocities these refugees have witnessed firsthand, these recordings contain the seeds of hope.
