In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields, Temporary Outdoor Exhibit
Project by: Achia Design
Client: Heritage Canada (PCH), 2015

This project is a memorable one for me, it just came together so beautifully.  The interpretive vision put together by PCH was elegant and clear. The exhibit was divided into two distinct parts 1) ‘In Flanders Fields’, a didactic description of the story-line, significance of the poem and poppy 2) ‘Presence of Absence’, a reflective space featuring portraits of solders before their departure for war.
I followed the interpretive plan to design a graphic language and exhibit layout that strengthened the two themes. I also created the exhibit title image of the poppies painted on paper.
Multiple layers of information were included on the installation plan to describe the overall layout, placement of graphics, and to assure UA circulation.
Shown here is as condensed presentation of the clients two preferred concepts.
Initial 3D assessment of the exhibit within the allotted space. Four exhibit structures were removed following this to better suit the content and site.
This is high-profile site, serving as a bridge over the Rideau Canal, situated adjacent to Senate of Canada, directly across the street from the Chateau Laurier, and with sight-lines to the War Memorial and Parliament Hill. The final installation created a space that was beautiful, poignant, and reflective, even amidst the busy life on plaza bridge.
