Squaring the circle

Competition: International idea competition for  urban renewal of  'Piazza  della Scala' - Milan (Italy)
Year: 2015
Client: city of Milan
Team: dsb-Landscape architecture  studio – Tesei Studio – arch. P. Ferrara
Role: Collaboration for planning, illustration, graphic rendering

The project is built around the centrality of Leonardo da Vinci’s statue and in relation of the facades of buildings. They are exactly the same, even the city transformation during years. ‘Squaring the circle’ was a metaphor beloved by Leonardo: we used that to project the site.
Starting from Leonardo’s octagon we design the pavement, inscribing it in a more regular figure and marking the access of the important buildings around the square: Italian Gallery Museum, Scala Theatre. This is reflected also on the tree choice: we use hornbeams with rectangular crown to make the statue always in evidence.
The water, very important element for the city, surrounds the statue and give the chance to sit on the stone benches behind it.
An integrate technology system in the benches, use the noise produced by visitors to change water color and make music.
