“Albinism is a genetic condition also called achromia, achromasia, or achromatosis. It is characterized by a deficit in the production in melanin and by the partial or complete absence of pigment in the skin, hair and eyes. This hereditary disease can be found in humans (affecting all races), mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians” - 

 

At this moment in Tanzania, Malawi, Burundi and other African countries alike Albinos are being hunted. It is strongly believed they possess magic and the ingestion of their blood and/or limbs will bring an individual health, wealth and good luck. This belief is so common place that it is not unheard of for family members of an adult or child with Albinism to orchestrate their capture. The killings have become so severe that individuals with Albinism have had to leave their homes and seek safety in established ‘safe camps’.

 

An X-ray is medically used to view bone and muscle through the skin. These images reveal the devastating damage blind, backward thinking superstition has created - an X-ray of an African male along side the X-ray of an African with Albinism. Alas we clearly see there is no magic between the bones of an Albino. The killings and mutilations are exactly that - merciless, mindless abuse and thievery of another human beings quality of life.
