Climatopia is a speculative calendar that illustrates a climate-changed future
Climatopia is a speculative calendar based on a climate changed future. It illustrates the changes we will experience with extreme weather, scarce resources, and the perception of time over the course of a year. We currently have a cultural understanding that a year that cycles through four seasons over 365 days. As our climate changes this understanding will become less accurate and more intensified.
While the idea of climate change feels like a distant future, many places are already feeling the effects of unpredictable and destructive weather patterns. We chose the year 2030 as a reminder that change needs to happen soon to avoid some of the severe changes we will soon experience.
Climatopia uses a playful approach in order to reach a wider audience. Since climate change cannot be changed by any single individual it can make people feel helpless and frustrated. The calendar is a reminder that our elected politicians play a bigger role that can lead to change. Individuals may not be able to stop climate change, but we can put pressure on politicians that do not see climate change as a threat to take legislative action that will have a big impact.
