Anthea Moys's profile

The Portrait Exchange

The Portrait Exchange: The work was a new piece commissioned for the exhibition "Towards Intersections" which opened at Unisa gallery, GIBS and Museum Africa during May – June 2015. It was also performed at the 2015 Turbine Art Fair.

"Fuelled by the desire to play with people from all walks of life and inspired by the belief that everyone can draw, Anthea Moys performs “The Portrait Exchange”. The work is inspired by ideas of exchange, structured interactions, and games. The performance is a portrait exchange between the artist and any willing participant who will sit across from her for a period of time, follow the rules (or break them) and play. After the interaction each will leave with a portrait of the other. It is hoped that the artist’s collection of portraits of herself, drawn by the audience, will grow over time.

The rules of the game: You have to draw the other person in one minute, but you cannot look at the page whilst you are drawing them. After the game we sign, date and exchange drawings: you give me your drawing of me and I give you my drawing of you. I then stick your drawing of me up on the wall behind me... and so the collection of (blind) portraits of me grows!"
