SOS Children's Villages (German: SOS-Kinderdorf) is an independent,non-governmental international development organization which has been workingto meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children since 1949.It was founded by Hermann Gmeiner in Imst, Austria.
After the war ofindependence, when the number of orphaned children increased in a sharp rate,there was a necessity to take action for the destitute children. Till now, thisneed has been remaining in an increasing rate for the lack of proper social andnational consciousness.
SOS-Children's Village actsas an independent non-governmental social development organization in Bangladesh.
As a consequence, theseinstitutions have been established primarily for meeting basic physical needsof the children: food, shelter, clothes, education etc. But the emotional,psychological, and social needs are not taken into consideration. The childrenliving in these institutions lead somewhat regimental life where familyenvironment is totally absent. So they grow physically well, but most of themcannot be sound, healthy in their psychological: 1) emotional, 2) mental and 3)social development.
The strong and deareducational and psychological principles underlying the SOS Children's Villageidea encourage the free development of every child's personality and talents byproviding---
- Love,security, continuity in the SOS-families.
- Soundschooling, and training in local schools/workshops/colleges --encouragement in
communityliving.
- Awide variety of facilities for extra-curricular and recreational activities andhobbies.
