University of British Columbia Sports ~ Banners

The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Olympic Hockey Arena concourse banners were the first phase of the new UBC Sports Hall of Fame. The challenge was to represent all UBC major sports from both genders while featuring actual UBC Hall of Fame inductees, all in highly dynamic, visually graphic, portrait friendly format, and chosen from a very limited supply of ill-kept sporting records ~ often blowing up  tiny halftone black & white reproductions from ancient year books to these12ft high icons.
The fabric needed to be seamed, sleeved with  rods inserted top and bottom. They are hung about 6" away from this severely curved end-zone wall clearly visible from within the arena. The yellow quote blocks were done as screen printed aluminum fastened behind, standing proud of the banners themselves. These quotes correspond and are attributed to the athletes whose image they are associated with.
Complimenting the banner project, a series of graphic panels were designed to be placed throughout the campus. Featuring Hall of Fame inductees (both individuals and teams), they served to draw students, faculty and visitors into the arena where the actual Hall of Fame is to be located. The jagged yellow 'ribbon' is a thematic element which was devised for several 3D elements used within the newly designed Hall of Fame itself. The Hall of Fame shield was also newly designed and was "value engineered" down from an actual slightly curved metalic shied that was to stand proud of the vertical surface of the panel.
