Ever since I was young and first discovered video games, I always wanted to create games featuring my character designs. However, I was never comfortable with creating pixel art, and wanted to find a way to utilize my illustration style for game assets as efficiently as possible. I developed a hybrid method that combines direct drawing and coloring with modular animation to develop character sprites that are quick to produce and easy to animate, without the trappings of robotic-looking bone or marionette-style animation techniques.
By drawing the character the way I would illustrate any character, then separating every moving part onto its own layer, reassembling them and animating using software such as Adobe Animate and Clip Studio Paint, I'm able to go from a rough character concept to a fully animated, 2D game-ready asset in very short time.
