Total Hip Replacement for Small Dogs and Cats

Joel Todd Leroy Prince, DVM, stands out as one of only 15 veterinarians in Illinois to receive board certification in small animal practice. Now on staff with several practices in and around the community of Naperville, Dr. Joel Todd Leroy Prince focuses much of his attention on orthopaedic surgery for dogs and cats.

Like humans, cats and dogs may develop painful hip conditions for which medical management is no longer sufficient. Large dogs with these issues have had access to total hip replacement for approximately 40 years, and reports of this procedure show its effectiveness in helping such dogs achieve normal levels of function. Until recently, however, small dogs and cats have not had access to a similarly effective treatment.

In the mid-2000s, however, veterinarians began performing a procedure known as micro total hip replacement. The procedure uses equipment from New Jersey company BioMedtrix, which creates prosthetics and surgical instrumentation for use on animals from 2.5 to 12 kg. The resultant surgery has proven thus far to have a low complication rate, and indications suggest that it can be a high-potential option for many pets with hip pain arising from a variety of causes.
