This shot was originally provided by Steve Etherington and showed the 2011 Mercedes AMG Petronas in the pits of the Indian Gran Prix racetrack. The old car had to be completely replaced with the new version of the 2012 season. The model came directly from the AMG-Petronas racing team in Brackley/UK. Putting the racing livery onto the high-res geometry was challening, but in the end it worked quite well. The detail on the tyres was done using various displacement maps.
In this shot the car and most parts of the aerodynamics testing facility were added in CGI. Only the ground and the areas behind the glass windows were taken from the photo. The volumetric light was also rendered in 3dsMax and Vray.
Alexander Bouquet photographed the background on a banked test track near Papenburg/Germany. The cars and the flags in the background were added later. Main task was to get the Silver Arrows to look as dirty and used as possible.
