Portland Pickles Hypothetical Branding
With the announcement of Portland’s new minor league baseball team, the Pickles, we felt the need to do a hypothetical branding exercise. No meetings with the front office, no formal creative brief. We solved for the home and away uniforms, a primary & secondary mascot, monogram, number system and of course the color palette. The goal was to spend two days sketching and two days executing it digitally. A tall order? Yes. Lots of enthusiasm? Yes. Here’s where we landed.
We opted to go in the visual direction of "heritage", versus that of a contemporary take on sport. Our reasoning was simple – the team is being sold to the city as a "community-scale sports franchise," the Pickles name was chosen by public vote and it's home field is in the laid back Southeast Lents neighborhood, originally occupied by Portlanders in the late 1800's. To us, heritage says cherished, quality, craftsmanship and care, all qualities a quintessential Portland neighborhood community stands behind.
