Bauhaus Museum - Dessau, Germany

The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation intends to realize the construction of a new Bauhaus Museum in Dessau on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus in 2019.

Continuing the 2007 upgrade and renewal project for the City Park in Dessau, our intention was that of creating a public space that would influence both the built form and the civic quality of the city. We envisioned a space similar to an open square for the entire city to enjoy: a public space next to the park that can define the public realm by avoiding pedestrian barriers.  It is the celebration of public space, and the encouragement of public activities that drives the form of our proposal.
We decided to suspend the building in order to allow a direct perception of the landscape, thus forming a floating gateway over the public square that will host shows, cultural gatherings, bookstores and open-air exhibitions. On the north-west side of the action field we decided to open up the whole building by removing a large volume with the purpose of providing a generous public space visible from the street, animated by views to the key elements of the building and also towards the interior space.
The building was thought as an open ended, adaptable framework with large well-serviced and well-lit floors that offer the possibility of a long life span and flexibility for a variety of possible uses. Our solution includes spaces that can be used for multiple activities in the short term,  with the alternative of long term use for future requirements.
