This is our proposal design for UIA-HYP CUP International Student Competition: Unexpected City, held by Tsinghua University, China, 2014. The main idea is to link city by the river of middle-low class economic people who live in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia.
We propose the unexpected as a progress of connection in river channels settlements which mostly inhabited with urban slum settlements. The proposal act as a catalyst of community, as bridges, as tool of connectors to aim the holistic networks, open and without ending, on each node of settlement.
While architecture acts as facilitator through understanding the site context, we realized that the multi-layers of problem need to be solved in a non-linear staging design. We proposed the focusing strategy and the idea of river belts, which focused more about the process.
Like a flux and rhizome, they can be organized together, an optimism of better future living city.
