For this project we had to create an event poster/gig poster for an event that has or will be taking place locally in the past/next 30 day. As with all the project in TPL our main goal is to use typography for the main design element, using the program Adobe InDesign. I went with the Maine Lobster  Festival for my event and  used the lobster and the ocean for my inspiration.
Though I am not originally from Maine, there is a certain pride the come when you live in a state like Maine. Every corner and most products (even food products) have big labels proudly stating “Made in Maine”. So I wanted to pick an event that really signified one of the aspects of Maine; potatoes, moose, forest, boating, arts/craft, and lobster. After reviewing many festivals, fairs, and art shows, the Maine Lobster Festival seemed like the perfect fit. While there is so much more to Maine than just lobsters, it is on thing that really put Maine on the map. I love all the different activity Maine has to offer from the Potatoes Blossom Festival, to Lincoln Homecoming festival (welcoming back snowbirds residents). The Lobster Festival is one of the largest ones and known through out the country, but mainly New England. That spirit and pride Mainers have there home is something missing in most states and is a big inspiration to me.
“Lobster” The east cost of Maine is filled with rich history and a lot of art, but there is a unique style to it all. A cross between New England old world, Modern, and Maritime, yet focused around the humble little lobster and lobster fishing, creating a style that is just fascinating. With this in mind I wanted to create something that showed the east cost of Maine, being nautical in nature (the maritime flag background) with a little modern feel (the layout of the text) while focusing on the lobster itself (the logo).
I went with the red because of the reference to lobsters, and for its contrast against the blue of water. I went with two tones of blue to give depth and contrast in the background. Black for it neutral contrast against red and blues. I choice to go with straight forward colors and than used transparency to give myself some different shades in order to keep it simple and to play off the simple nature of the poster.
Yes that is a pink lobster buoy, lobster buoys have to be painted in the color(s)/design that is registered to that lobster fisher. While walking on a rock beach along the southern coast, my kids and I found this buoy mixed in with debris at the tide line. So I did not choose the color, it was just a matter of chance that we came across it. And I would never change such a serendipitous discovery that fit right in with my daughter’s décor.
