Predator & Prey

Our second assignment in Intro to Illustration was to place the creature we'd designed in the first assignment into a scene - specifically where it was in the midst of feeding while simultaneously catching sight of an out-of-view attacker.

Crow quill & ink wash on bristol.  Original is 14x17.

This piece was published in Pulp City, my school's art and literary magazine, in the Spring 2015 issue.
Wolf Face

I was contacted through one of my teachers by a local fellow who wanted a pencil rendering of a particular wolf face from an old calendar.  Unfortunately he hasn't been very reliable on meeting me to pay for it, so I still have the original.

Pencil on bristol.  Original is 8x10.
Coyote Phoenix Tattoo

A relative of mine asked me to design this for him.  It's on his back, across his right shoulder blade.  The original was done as a vector image, so it could be easily resized.

Drawn in Illustrator and Photoshop.
Justice In Winter

The cover art for a self-published novel.  A sort of historical fiction/science fiction mash-up story.  Available on Amazon!

Digitally painted in Sketchbook Pro and Photoshop.
Love

The assignment here was in 2 parts - to depict something we love, incorporating the actual word, and also something we hate, again doing the same for the word.  Part of it was an exercise in color theory - we were supposed to consider emotional responses to colors in our choices.  I'm displaying each half of the piece separately here to make it easier to see them, but the original is all one piece.  As is hardly surprising to anyone that knows me at all, I chose "dragons" for my love portion.

Goauche on bristol.  Original is 14x17, though this half is 14x8.5.

The Battle of Iron Town

Sadly, this one loses a lot of the impact in being digitized.  The assignment here was to depict a scene from a favorite movie (I chose Princess Mononoke), but the tricky part is it had to be done in layers, creating a 3D effect.  It isn't terribly obvious in this scan, but this is a piece with 6 distinct layers, each separated by foam core.  The sky is the lowest layer, with the buildings above.  The crowd is a layer over that, with San above them.  Ashitaka, along with San's hands and Hiboshi's sword and hand, are on the next one up, with Hiboshi on the topmost layer.  And actually, there's sort of a 7th, as the border is on yet another layer above.

Goauche on bristol, with foam core spacers.  I made the phantom tentacles on Ashitaka's arm from acetate.  Original is 14x17, and about 2" thick.
Tron Movie Poster

Our assignment here was to design an original poster for a favorite film.  The only requirements were that the name of the movie had to be present, and there needed to be at least one of the starring actors' names visible as well.

I've always been fond of Tron (the original, of course - the recent sequel wasn't nearly as good, even if it did look very pretty).  The light cycles and recognizers are iconic elements of the film, so I knew I wanted to feature those prominently.  I also knew I wanted to incorporate the jetwalls the light cycles produce on the game grid into the formation of the logo.  My rendition of the logo is a bit different than the original, since I needed shapes that could be drawn in single lines.

Painted in goauche on bristol, with some color pencil (for the gridlines and glowing elements).  Original is 14x17.
I Have No Idea...

...what you're talking about, so here's a bunny with a pancake on its head.

My own contribution to a popular internet meme.  Created as a gift to a co-worker of my wife's, who has the original.

Original is 11x14, ink and copic marker on bristol.
Demon's Gaze

I'd gotten out of the habit of art for a few years, and this was my effort to shake the rust off.  This is an entirely digital piece.
Drawn in Sketchbook Pro, painted in Photoshop with a few details in Illustrator.
Shattered Glass

Technically still unfinished (one of these days I swear I'll paint the figure properly), this is a composite piece - I originally sketched the scene and the figure separately.  After scanning each one in, I more or less re-did the window digitally, using the original sketch as a guide.  The figure is still a fairly simple digital coloring of the original sketch, pasted onto the window scene.

Sketched in pencil at 11x14, painted in Photoshop.
Desert Tree

Based on a photo I found in a magazine of a model standing in the branches of a dead tree on a beach.  Though still all pencil sketch, this is a composite image - I drew the tree and background separately from the angel, at different scales to maximize detail, then combined them after scanning.

Originals are 11x14.
Wayfaring Redeemed

Inspired by The Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass.  Also, I have a habit of drawing demons.

Original is 11x14.
Faces of Emma Stone

A series of paintings based on a photo of Emma Stone, each done in a different shade of monochrome, with the last one done in a semi-realistic style.

Original is 14x17, goauche on bristol.
