Space Time Compression

The project requires active observation and recording of a particular space over a span of two days. The outcome is based on an intriguing presentation of the three most interesting aspects, regardless of how mundane or bizarre they are. The challenge lay in presenting back what Jeanette Winterson terms as ‘the shock of the familiar’.

The subject of space-time compression was explored in Singapore’s context. The idea of the video is founded on the basis that the perception of space and time is continually being adjusted. A hyperlapse video was hence used to document Singapore’s ceaseless acclimatization to space-time compression. To sensitize the audience towards feeling the difference in the notion of space and time, a mirror filter was employed to give a sense of compression and the video was projected on a large wall. Essentially, the viewer sees himself on a journey from old Singapore to modern Singapore.
