    Discrimination and injustice are major causes of poverty worldwide, and women and girls bear the brunt of it in all aspects of their lives. To draw attention to this issue, Oxfam Australia asked designers from across Australia to get involved. Our design focuses on the notion of ‘reducing the gap’. It reinforces gender equality and the value of women and men as equal contributors to society. Unity is symbolised by merging the female XX and male XY chromosomes. It emphasises the joining of forces and the need for both genders to work together. The XX/XY union renders the genders indistinguishable. They are no longer either XX or XY. Using the chromosomes as design elements avoids clichéd male/female imagery that further enforces stereotypes. The design against a black background demands attention and forces the viewer to look deeper into the message. Gender equality is a current issue and needs to be continually addressed. For this reason, we created a design that encompasses progression. Put simply, gender equality starts today and is the future of humanity. Read Less
