People in the Middle Ages used to store their money in jars made from an orange clay called "pygg". This eventually evolved into the term "piggy bank", though it remains unsure when the pig shape came about.
This was the background research for our project "Pyggy Bank", a product created in collaboration with FARM for MADE FOR SAM (Singapore Art Museum), a collection of contemporary designer products. We originally envisioned a series of
ceramic banks shaped to resemble various parts
of a pig. Only the leg was chosen to be produced
in the end.
