Berg - Bachelor Thesis

The 2013 Bachelor Thesis Project was set by the school and asked to develop an intermediary space in the form of a public building focusing on film and cultural activities at Järntorget (Iron Square), Gothenburg, Sweden. The general effort was laid on social sustainability and promoting the benefits of, and also activate, cultural activities in the city.

In this project I have pushed myself in several ways by focusing further on letting the voids set out the form, and therefore shaping what is not there, enhancing the complexity of the flows and interactions between the spaces and its users, and also experimenting in new modelling techniques, both analogue and digital, to further enhance my ability in communicating my ideas to both myself, during the process, and to others, upon presentation through a range of media.

Moreover, it has also become a statement where I have “tried my wings” and broken loose from the schools architectural expression, and starting to find my own. Addtionally, this building focuses the everyday pedestrian paths of thousands of people to the inner square forming the ground level. Besides offering the visitor to interact with the workshops, the exhibition areas forms a vertical plaza and the irregular shapes invites unexpected expressions but also forms a great environment for studios etc. Finally, it suggests a short term housing program allowing visiting artists to fully live within the building and be able to focus on their art and peformance.
