Viewers from around the globe tuned in last night to watch the entertainment industry wrap up its award season with the 87th Academy Awards. The luminous Dolby Theatre was at max capacity as Neil Patrick Harris pulled from his vast experience as an award host to emcee the Oscars. Harris launched the show with a sweeping musical number complete with catchy lyrics, stunning special effects, and even stormtroopers to sing an ode to “moving pictures.” 

 

In terms of awards presented, there were few surprises. In fact, award winners from four out of the five top categories mirrored the Golden Globes and BAFTA's exactly. J.K. Simmons and Patricia Arquette were recognized yet again for their supporting roles in “Whiplash” and “Boyhood” respectively. Eddie Redmayne won Best Actor for his portrayal of cosmologist Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything”, and Julianne Moore walked away with her first Oscar for her performance in “Still Alice”. The only departure from this trend was “Birdman”, starring Michael Keaton, which won Best Picture.

 

Of course, the fashion highlights of the evening came ahead of the musical numbers and award presentations.
