For this assignment, we were asked to research and write an essay about a prominent graphic designer and then use that essay for the content of a book design. The book was to be designed using an underlying grid system and was to be influenced by the subject’s design philosophies. I chose to write and design my book about David Carson.
I designed with a modular grid system so I could preserve the haphazard feel present in Carson’s works while still maintaining a sense of organization. The color scheme of orange and blue, two contrasting colors, represents the way Carson’s designs contrast traditional graphic design sensibilities. I also made the cover simple to contrast and draw attention to the busy pages within the book.
