Roof Art Project, Grand Depart Utrecht, TDF 2015

Surface Design
In the beginning of 2015 Nimeto (School of crafts and applied arts, Primary/Secondary Education) invited me to collaborate on this Roof Art Project. The challenge was to make an image on top of the Nimeto building that had a connection with the city of Utrecht and the Grand Depart of the Tour de France that would take place in the beginning of July 2015. We came up with this very basic idea of putting a large post stamp on top of the building, like putting a stamp on a package. The stamp would show the Dom Tower the most important landmark of Utrecht and the flying riders that would refer to the heroic status of the Tour de France riders. Students of Nimeto were assigned to do this massive paint job. A total of 588 tiles had to be painted, tile size was 40 x 40 cm. The hole piece measured approximately 100 square meters. It was a real delight working with the students, the team coaches and very kind staff of Nimeto. Special thanks to Bad-Ass Hans Berkvens, Ivanka Massink and Annechien Deurloo for all their support! And Rob Baar for documenting the whole process from start to end! Thanks buddies, this project will stay with me for a long time.
