The Chilmark Flea Market
A Flea Market Like No Other
Being a longtime fan of, and on/off vendor at The Chilmark Flea Market, I decided to jump in and make this a personal project. I felt that the Chilmark Flea, as it is affectionately referred to by many, needed a boost in order to compete with newer flea markets on-island, as well as its history of changing venues. It has in fact been at the same location for the last several years, but there always seemed to be some confusion, and a trail of cars not quite sure where to go.

My objective was to make it plain and clear to all, that The Flea lives on, and it can be found at 142 North Road every Wednesday and Saturday in the Summer. And in doing so, maintain the old world Flea Market feeling. I set about examining what the Flea had that was recognizable as a starting point, as it is always easier to re-invigorate a brand with something already familiar. It was their yellow and black Flea Market street/parking signs. From here, I incorporated these striking colors into an old-time Letterpress-style design with a map for the flyers and postcards, and added a reference to The Chilmark Community Church, as the event raises much needed funds for the Church.

In creating the flyers which I posted everywhere I could up-island, newspaper ads, and postcards to hand out at the Flea Market and distribute to other vendors, I hoped to build awareness of The Flea Market both for the vendors, and the church. This event needed to be successful for all parties in order to continue. In addition to these items, I created Chilmark Flea Market T-shirts in two colorways, and sold them at The Flea to also raise awareness. The Ts soon became collectible and I found myself placing a second order in a matter of a couple of weeks. A portion of the T-shirt sales was given back to the Church to help pay for newspaper advertising (I was soon nick-named the "Cash Fairy", and so the media and exposure wheels spun, and did their job to bring more people back up-island to The Flea.

It was one of my favorite projects, and 2012 marks the Flea Market's 45th Anniversary Year. The feedback for this project was all positive, and many felt like the Chilmark Flea had regained its identity. I'm looking forward to having a booth there this summer.
