Brawl Bolts Level Design

Brawl Bolts is an arcade style action game with emphasis on strategic thinking. The main goal is to bash your opponent's castles by throwing Bolts at them while building and protecting your own.
I was working at Fat Lemon Entertainment for five months and was solely responsible for the game's over 50 levels. I was given all the planned gameplay elements to experiment with, to create fun and challenging levels which also had to contribute to a smooth and natural campaign progression.
The challenge of the project was to come up with enough meaningful ideas for levels that actually have a clear function in the campaign progression. The available gameplay elements were well thought and selected but there wasn't really that many of them and the level boundaries and rules were also somewhat limiting to keep the craziest ideas in check. I really had to explore all untapped potential and utilize every unique aspect I could find to keep the levels unique, interesting and fresh through the adventure of over 40 levels.
The level design of this game is a somewhat difficult thing to properly present (imagine trying to explain what goes into the level design of a match-three game, whew) but I hope these screenshots can convey some of the work and thought I put into it!
The game has been released in Australia and New Zealand, and is set to be released elsewhere too in the near future!
