"The stars digital signature" - dome projection

The Stars Digital Signature

This animation project was made in partnership with the Porto Planetarium. This was done for the inauguration of their new dome projection system.
The infographic animation tries to explain in simple terms, how we get the information about the stars we can’t visit. How do we know about their composition, their elements?

The answer is in the light that reaches us from them and the amount of information it contains. In fact, everything we know about all the stars located beyond the Solar System results from the analysis and studying of the light that comes from them.
By decomposing the light with a glass prism, diffracting it, we get a color sequence know as a light spectrum. Different colors correspond to different frequencies of light.

These spectrums contain a big part of the information we receive from the stars. And by analyzing them, we can identify the chemical elements that compose the stars that emit that “specific light”.
Light is a vehicle that carries a fabulous amount of information. By separating the light into different colors and analyzing the resulting spectrum made it possible to unlock many secrets of the universe. Each celestial object that is studied has a "message" printed in its emitted light. Every star has its own signature, it’s own “fingerprint”.

The project began with adjustments to the copy, which was very “scientific”. We adapted the text to a more simplified version since these animations where for a very young target audience.
Then we started to think about the animations and storyboarded the entire sequence.
We made an animatic in Adobe Premiere and recorded the copy using our own voice-over, just to test the timings and block the animation. When we got the final version we jumped to the illustration and animation stages.

As a guide during the production process ESAD provided us with a 3D rig in Cinema 4D to project the animations that were made in After Effects. It was a mock up that simulated the dome projection system and basically made it possible for us to test and see how our animations would behave in the projection space.

ESAD teachers and scientist from Porto Planetarium where deeply involved in all stages of production and were a valuable help in the production process.
