RESEARCH: ABOUT THE MAGAZINE: It is a magazine published by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architect, which is published quarterly. The purpose of the magazine is to follow up what is happening in the world of architecture and select a specific topic for every issue, which is case, studied according to Sri Lanka’s atmosphere. All the contents are written by architects. TARGET AUDIENCE: The Target audiences of the magazine are professionals and students. But the purpose of using the magazine differs. Students use it as an information magazine. Where as, professional uses it as a quick going through magazine, otherwise known as a flip magazine. SOLUTION: The purpose, of the redesign of this magazine is to give a solution where both of the target audience can use according to their purpose. This will be design in a way that even if the reader is using it as a quick going through magazine they would not miss out on anything. DESIGN STYLE: The design style of the magazine was inspired from newspapers; the purpose of it is to catch up with latest events. Same goes with the architect magazine, there main aim is to provide reader about the current events happening around Sri Lanka Architecture. Using the design style of the newspaper the layouts are in a way highlighting the important points in the magazine articles. These points will be highlighted according to the masthead color, which differs every issue. MASTHEAD: A humanist typeface has been adapted, inspired by the bold headlines of newspapers. Humanist typefaces came after black letter typefaces, and the main objective for their use was to improve legibility, though it is largely ignored by the current generation. The chosen typeface characterizes how Sri Lankan architects draw inspiration from both modern and ancient ancestral architecture. Humanist typefaces maintained a traditional quality while also adapting to serve the specific purpose of legibility, being used in newspapers and so forth. This is similar to how Sri Lankan architects do not forgo the styles and influence of their ancestors, but maintain a traditional quality while adapting to the specific demands of modern life. BRIEF:
Redesign a magazine from the list provided. The magazine I choose to redesign is “ The Architect”. We have to research the selected magazine thoroughly, understanding the target audience and the content of the magazine, while studying the culture that surrounds the publication.
