King of The Dot
King of The Dot (KOTD) is a north american organization based out of Toronto that holds battle rap events. Currently the brand has millions of hits on YouTube and has participants from all over the world. Early on, KOTD began by holding battle events that spanned several major Canadian cities. As a fan of the movement, I got in touch with both the founder of the company and the organizers of the Toronto and Montreal events and had the opportunity to create a few posters for them. As the designs above and below show, these events tend to have a lot of performers. The organizers would emphasize the importance of having them be the focal point of each poster. The design challenge emerged: How can we create posters for each event that are both heavy in text but different enough to stand out on its own? My solution was to use colours that wouldn't appear on the average posters for an event of this nature. With the organization rooted in grassroots, there was no brand guide or standard to follow and as such I pushed the looks to the extremes. More specifically, I chose to ditch the darker and grungier looks found for events like these and take inspiration from wrestling and club flyers to provide a nice blend of both styles.
