This piece was created for a local illustration exhibition here in Reykjavík about the ordinary lives of superheroes. I chose to illustrate Dinah Drake, the florist by day who secretly dons a blond wig and fishnets to fight crime on the streets of Gotham City as Black Canary.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Black Canary, or comic book heroes in general, I hadn't heard of her before either. But when I did some research, I simply loved her story. Her father, Richard Drake, was a detective for Gotham City, and he trained his "little canary" in hand-to-hand combat and martial arts in hopes that she would follow in his footsteps. When she was not accepted into the force, her father was heartbroken and passed away shortly thereafter, disillusioned. With her inheritance money she bought a flower shop and continued to fight crime in secret as Black Canary.

Below are some process pictures, starting with the sketching phase. I scanned the final pencil drawing and colored it digitally. I hope you enjoy it! :)
