Vicki Kotze's profile

Book Design & Illustration Project

The subject of this book is the woman who was my German language and life orientation teacher in high school, Maretha Kruger. Her influence on the school, teachers, and especially students, has been extremely positive. She is a woman who never loses faith, a wonderful and patient teacher, and also an open-minded and kind-hearted. Many learners turn to her for guidance because they trust and respect her. She has overcome many challenges in life and she still remains positive.

The visuals were inspired by a specific quote that referred to her as being able to care for the “little birds” with broken wings among the learners. This is why the illustrations are of various birds, depending on the chapter contents. The circular, vector illustrations are based on the style of stained glass in churches and cathedrals, as a symbol of her faith.

"Baskerville" is the typeface used for the body copy of the book because it is a traditional, approachable and quite delicate typeface. "Dancing Script" is used as the display typeface, for titles and the cover information, because it is more feminine and friendly.
Illustrated endpaper used in the book.
