Technician student newspaper
Illustrations and infographics
During my time with the Technician student newspaper, I quickly moved up the ranks from a page designer to design co-editor to design director of the daily paper in just two years. I designed news, features, opinion and sports pages. I took great pleasure in planning special packages and editions as well as in leading a staff of 10 designers. I won numerous awards for my work, which are listed on the Honors page.
This package about the Krispy Kreme Challenge ran in the Technician student newspaper Jan. 24, 2008. I drew the doughnut designs and paired them with the alternative copy. From the step-by-step "How to eat a doughnut" to the illustrated infographic of the previous year's race, I designed this layout with the intention of letting readers see a new angle on this highly-publicized race. This page was nominated for the 2008 Design of the Year.
This special opinion page about the conflict in Gaza ran in the Technician student newspaper Jan. 13, 2009. I used a tablet to draw the images of the Israeli and Palestinian flags. The page featured a news story, an editorial and four columns to present a variety of perspectives on the issue. This page won a first place Gold Circle award in editorial page design broadsheet color from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
This special opinion page about prejudice on campus ran in the Technician student newspaper Nov. 10, 2008. In light of hate speech that had been happening around campus, I worked with the editors to develop this out-of-the-ordinary opinion page. I focused on typographical hierarchy to catch eyes and lead them down the page through the editorial. The reverse type was a tactic to get readers to look at the page. This page won a first place Gold Circle award for black & white editorial page design from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and first place for editorial page design from the Society for Collegiate Journalists.
This features page about high speed trains ran in the Technician student newspaper March 12, 2009. The story reported that stimulus money could bring eight high speed trains to Raleigh. I worked with the features editor to design a set of infographics detailing the train routes, the planning timeline and facts about the trains to be paired with a staff photo and the article. This page won an honorable mention Gold Circle award for color feature page design from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and an honorable mention for front page design from the Society for Collegiate Journalists.
This doubletruck spread about student opinions on political issues ran in the Technician student newspaper Dec. 6, 2010. The page presented data on the Pack Poll, a study completed by the University's political science department. I used the data to create a number of graphs in Adobe Illustrator to go with an article about the poll and an article about what the poll data revealed. This spread won fourth place in the 2011 Design of the Year competition from the Associated Collegiate Press and first place for infographic design in the College Media Advisers' Best of Collegiate Design 19.
This special opinion page about illegal music downloading ran in the Technician student newspaper Feb. 13, 2008. I drew upon the famous 1942 World War II poster "He's Watching You" to create this design about how the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) was cracking down on students' illegal music downloading at N.C. State University. The page featured a news story, an editorial and four columns to present a variety of perspectives on the issue.
