Game Character Design

As part of Sugar Creative's Summer Intern Brief, I was asked to create a character design for a game. The character must have a backstory and include sketches and the final design.

I focussed on well known, memorable characters, particularly Nintendo. Characters such as Kirby and Pokemon are family friendly, appeal to all ages and are timeless and memorable.

Because of my passion for the ocean, I wanted my character to be some type of manta ray. I then went on to research mermaid sketches and sea creature sketches to develop the style for my character.

Backstory
This is Beam, a baby Glowray. Glowrays are thought to be the mythical beloved creatures of the Gods. They are the things of myth and legend except, in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean...they exist.

Unbeknownst to the Humans, Earth is in great peril. Beam has been given the task to rid the oceans of Micromutants - A mutated form of sea creatures modified by microplastic pollution.
Sent by the Goddess of the Seas, Beam has one mission; save the ocean - save the world.
With the help of his Sun-lit tail, Beam must call upon the power of the Gods to help rid the oceans of plastic pollution once and for all. Swim, loop and glide through the oceans deepest and darkest areas, with Beam’s tail to guide the way. Level up and grow by defeating Micromutants and absorbing UV Rays in preparation to defeat them once and for all!
