3DCG Bugs - Milan Expo 2015
I worked with the studio "The Others" team into creating this realistic bugs for the Belgian Pavilion in the Milan Expo 2015.
Was a bit of a challange because of the time, and the limited resources that we had but we could carry on the project nicely I think! :)

There was 6 vertical Screens with the bugs animation looping, thats why we have this strange vertical video sindrome....
I worked on the modelling of the bugs, first in lowpoly and then adding fine detail in Mudbox.
The basic modelling of the bugs didnt took so long, 1 day for each including the rig and skinning.
Then the Mudbox part took a bit longer, adding details and textures.
We took some photos for the textures, but in some cases wasn't possible, so I had to paint them with some stock photo images of the bugs.

I did the rigging of all of them, mostly in CAT but some of them needed to be custom made rig.

I took care of some of the lighting in the scenes and also render setup and optimization, and also some "props" of the background, like the tree, or the ceramic.
We rendered all in local machines, so had to be quite optimized.
I took care of the animation of all the bugs, but really the time was really tight already for this stage, so I had to hurry, so I didn't spent as much as I wanted in every bug, but sometimes happen... some of them had 16 legs... was a bit of a challange also... 1.5 days for each video.
I used CAT motion for some of the bugs, but mostly is hand animated because of the shape of the surfaces where they have to move into.
I hope you like the video despite beeing a bit disgusting ;))
