2011 Agromeck
Work from the N.C. State University annual
As editor of the Agromeck, N.C. State University's official yearbook, I worked to produce a historical record of the 2010-2011 school year. I art directed all of the design in the 376-page book, as well as managed seven section editors and a staff of 40 people, a budget of $90,000 and distribution of 1,000 books to seniors. The underlying theme for the book was "moving forward," as the University recovered the economic crisis and administrative turmoil in 2009. The fonts utilized are Vitesse and Gotham Extra Narrow.

On March 18, 2012, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association awarded the Agromeck its highest honor for collegiate yearbooks, the Gold Crown. It was one of seven yearbooks to win the award. On March 20, 2012, the Associated Collegiate Press named the Agromeck and ten other college yearbooks Pacemaker finalists. ACP will announce the winners of the contest in late October 2012.
With Jordan Moore, assistant photo editor, as the photographer and illustrator, I art directed this dustjacket for the book. Jordan merged and painted together approximately 35 long-exposure photos of the Free Expression Tunnel on campus, an area that underwent much scrutiny in 2011.
A spread from the book's opener, focusing on athletics. Luis Zapata's photo of the cheerleader at an away football game, is one of my favorites from the book, as it captured the power of school spirit at our school. The copy, which I wrote, focused on the qualities of students at the school.
A photo montage of the work from Art to Wear, a fashion show featuring student work in the College of Design and the College of Textiles.
This spread documented the re-lighting of a light sculpture wall on campus. The page featured a story and a timeline of its life in addition to the panorama of the Color Wall itself. Designed with Stephanie Doss, assistant design editor.
This spread featured food from the North Carolina State Fair. I researched the prices and calories for each item, which we bought and photographed in studio for this spread.
The book was set up chronologically, making it easier to submit pages to plant as well as plan for stories in advance. The opener for each month was a news round-up spread with a doubletruck photo, a page from the student newspaper Technician and four news blips. March's featured the Japan earthquake and tsunami and the retirement announcement of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Tom Stafford.
In order to keep the portrait pages interesting, I had the staff profile a senior student from each college. The ticker line at the bottom gave statistics about the University's rankings during the school year.
