Excerpt from the preface of color-theory
"The whole of nature reveals itself through the colours to meet the eye. Meanwhile, we suggest, though uncanny as it may seem, that the eye cannot recognise figures, or objects from one another, where mere shades and colors distinguish what we see. And so, from these three impressions, we make out the visible world and thus we make out visible poetry. After all, we make out a world, which is more honest, than the one we are used to."

"Die ganze Natur offenbare sich durch die Farbe dem Sinne des Auges. Nunmehr behaupten wir, wenn es auch einigermaßen sonderbar klingen mag, daß das Auge keine Form sehe, indem Hell, Dunkel und Farbe zusammen allein dasjenige ausmachen, was den Gegenstand vom Gegenstand, die Teile des Gegenstandes voneinander fürs Auge unterscheidet. Und so erbauen wir aus diesen dreien die sichtbare Welt und machen dadurch zugleich die Malerei möglich, welche auf der Tafel eine weit vollkommner sichtbare Welt, als die wirkliche sein kann, hervorzubringen vermag."
