Candle holder – light, honest, functional

This project started with a study into the history and founding ideas of contemporary Scandinavian design.
The brief called for a series of at least five vessels that were batch manufactured by hand, including a cast component as well as a lid or handle integrated into the design.

LIGHT | HONEST | FUNCTIONAL
The resulting product is a tea-light candle holder that has aluminium shutters which can be twisted closed to extinguish the flame, creating a pleasurable experience from an otherwise mundane activity.
The final product is made from a concrete–plaster mix, yaka timber and aluminium. The mixture is cast into a two part cibatool mould, the wood is turned on a lathe and the aluminium shutters are cut using a waterjet before being finished by hand.
Five of the ten candle holders being displayed on a bespoke plinth at Massey University's Center for Industrial Design.
