Argus tells Hera he's seen her husband Zeus with another woman. She races to catch him, but he hears her coming, and quickly turns his lover Io into a beautiful cow.
Hera confronts Zeus, who denies that the cow is anything but an ordinary cow. So Hera demands the cow as a gift, and takes her to be guarded by her servant Argus. Argus watches over Io, never closing all of his hundred eyes at the same time.
Hermes, sent by Zeus, entertains Argus and charms him to sleep with his music, then kills him.
Hermes leaves with Io, and Hera discovers Argus dead. Grieving for her faithful servant, she memorializes him by putting his eyes onto the tail of her favorite bird, the peacock.
