THIRD PRIZE
International Architectural Competition, Seun Sanga, Seoul.

01_URBAN FOSSIL
More than a building Sewon Sanga represents an urban fossil that paradoxically has become a modern archaeological relic, while still alive and functioning.  To remain relevant, Sewon has to adapt and transform to the present. In the process generate a vision for Seoul’s future, which, steers away from grand utopic images rather focusing on consolidating the here and now.

02_ELEMENTS OF A SYSTEM
Conceiving the Sewon Sanga project as a system is the antithesis of generating a cosmetic or gratuitous form as a proposal. The system is based on overlapping but separate layers, each component working together with the other to create a new and de- fined synergy.  All the elements of the system combine to act as an urban filter: a mechanism to order and inject a new impetus into an ailing complex.  The “filter” is conceived as an autonomous independent component, which generates new conditions and relationships when set against the existing concrete materiality of Sewon.

03_INDEPENDENT ARCHITECTURE
The new independent structure, generates a complex relationship with the city in section.  It is exactly in section where the new project comes alive: the perfectly horizontal slab accentuates the +10m level change between the North and South side, in the process generating a generous covered public space adjacent to the entrance to the Jongmyo Shrine.

04_SEQUENCE OF SPACES
The linear Park has been designed as a sequence of individual “Layers” running perpendicular to the main orientation of the complex (East/West). Each layers has been conceived following a specific theme: Korean Garden / New Programme / Four Seasons / Vegetation which are then laid out in a staggered manner as to create a woven landscape.
