Chile is one of the few countries in the world where abortion is still criminalized in all its forms, due to the policies inherited from Chile's military regime era 17 years ago. The current law does not distinguish between the types of abortion, as they're all considered a crime. There are however extreme cases that must be revised by the law and amended, that is: health concerns and the risk of the mother's life, non-viable fetus cases and pregnancies due to rapes. There is still a bill that isn't moving forward because of the influence of political, economic powers, the church, and the politicians who don't dare to approve it. Today we have more than 6 thousand signatures in favor of the approval of the law and the number is currently growing. Read Less

This set of harrowing "abortion tutorials " from Chile is designed to press lawmakers to legalize abortion, by highlighting the lengths some women will go to in a country where termination of pregnancy is illegal.
The powerful and shocking campaign, created by Grey Chile for sexual and reproductive rights group Somos Miles, backs Chile's Therapeutic Abortion Bill, presented in Parliament last February by President Bachelet, which could make abortion legal in the country. The group says thousands of Chilean women are dying from illegal abortions every year.
The videos are all presented by attractive young woman who start out brightly in the manner of a makeup or cooking tutorial on YouTube -- but it gradually becomes apparent that they're actually talking you through how to terminate a pregnancy in the most horrific, violent ways. For example, as seen here, throwing yourself backwards down a steep flight of stairs. Or getting yourself run over at traffic lights, or falling over a fire hydrant in stilettos. They all end by pointing out that at the moment, the only legal abortion in Chile is an accidental abortion.
