Brickfields Cultural Centre: Case Studies & Sketches

Precedent Studies

The study focuses on cultural and multifunctional spaces.

I did a study on the Nebuta House by Molo which inspired me to introduce color to represent the culture and energy of the area. Apart from that, the shaping of the metal fins creats a organic movement , creating an illusion that the fins are not metal but of an organic material ; resulting in a more welcoming form and finish. In addition, the introduction to a dimly lit interior from the fins which filtered the sun rays, created a more dynamic ambiance for the display to be showcased in.

My second study was done on Crazy World Cafe, Singapore where it is a multifunctional space. The interchangeable configuration of the space takes it from a cafe by day and a performance hub by night makes me more interested in the subject matter. I have also observed and studied on ways the display could not only correlate to the space but also to break and absorb sounds in that retail.
Site microclimatic studies:

Looking at the selected site, I further analyze the microclimatic issue of the area. The site being situated close to main roads and a barren land for a parking lot would most certainly garner alot of heat resulting a concentrated heat pool. In fact, the neighbouring buildings being modern skyrise would restrict and break wind movements that try to reach the targeted site area.

This results in the idea of introducing more openings and creating an environment that is self sustaining to the existing microclimate of the area to create a more comfortable space.
Preliminary Sketches and Ideas:

The preliminary sketches explores the intergration of the concept "Unison Duality" in the space. The concept is taken into consideration to how it would create a form that could cater and control the microclimatic change of the area while taking into account the ideal form that the building should convey.
Sketch of  concept idea on paper - Unison Duality.
Intergration of concept in space on pen.
Material consideration, building massing and vegetation.
Restructuring and rethinking the building envolope with relation to concept.
Space functionality, needs and structural intervention and enhancement - an exploration.
