“ShukaVarna”, Sanskrit for the colors of a parrot, is a collection of clamp dyed tussar stoles that are complete with contemporary and quirky patterns with a hint of embroidery to give it that little emphasis it needs. Free like the soul of a parrot, the idea captivates the urge to expression. Creativity expressed not through subtle and quiet voices, but through screaming colors that craves for attention. The parrot need only spread its wings to unveil the beauty in its appearance, with all its hues and tints of fresh color.

Similarly, this collection takes on a abstract yet geometrical viewpoint on one of nature’s most admired species. Triangles like the beak of the parrot, the circles matching the eyes that predict your future and the stripes like the rings around the neck of parrot craning its head to ruffle its iridescent feathers.

ShukaVarna; Stoles that make your colorful soul flutter…

ShukaVarna; Awakening the screaming expressionist from within…
These stoles were created and presented as my Graduation Project whilst pursuing my degree at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Chennai. This collection is entirely handmade with the base material being natural tussar which was sourced from Delhi. These designer stoles are now available at the Amethyst Cafe in Royapettah, Chennai located in India.
The geometric designs on these stoles are a result of multiple folding methods and then subsequently dyeing them in a hot water bath. This follows the ancient Japanese technique of clamp dyeing called "Itajime" that have been implied in the making of these stoles. The fabric is also finished with silk piping and feather shirred tassles to give that extra flutter...
This collection was made on behalf of the brand Kaya's Classic Handcrafted Sarees, which is a petite start up boutique in R.A. Puram, Chennai. They offer a wide range of handcrafted sarees and garments for the traditional Indian women of today.
