Do you Really need Sky TV?

Sky is one of the giants of UK telecom service providers, along with BT and Virgin Media. With so many people now strongly with monthly expenses, it’s worth considering if Sky TV is really an extra expense that you need.

10 common misconceptions about Sky TV

1. You have the best choice of channels

Whilst Sky does have a lot of channels available, they come at a cost. If you want to get all the channels they offer, it’s going to set you back a considerable amount. Even the most basic package they offer comes with a monthly fee.

2. Sky+ boxes are the best

Sky+ boxes are certainly easy to use and come with the features you’d expect -  they are all one and the same. When you sign up for a Sky subscription, you’ll receive the same Sky+ box as everyone else. There’s no option to specify the size of the hard drive or request additional features.

3. It’s the best choice for football fans

For a long time, Sky Sports was the go to place for football fans. However BT Sports has now thrown a real spanner in the works and from 2015 onwards, will be the home of European football. Sky Sports still show a lot of Premier League games throughout the year, but they’re certainly not the only choice for football fans anymore.

4. Installation is fast

When you order Sky TV, you’ll usually have to wait a while to have it installed. This is especially true when ordering Sky TV as part of a phone and broadband package.

5. It’s available everywhere

There are certain areas in the UK that cannot get access to Sky TV so it’s always important to check what the availability is like in your area.

6. There’s no commitment

Most people who sign up to Sky TV will do so under a 12-month contract. This means that if you want to cancel early, you’ll have to pay a fee. Most people are trying to avoid big commitments nowadays so this is definitely worth bearing in mind before you take a Sky subscription out.

7. HD is standard

You might assume that HD channels come as standard with Sky but this is not the case. HD channels are an additional charge and depending on how many packages you take out, the extra charges can soon add up.

8. What you pay is fixed

When you first take out a Sky subscription, you’ll be informed that your monthly costs are subject to change. This is somewhat disconcerting since you’re not told exactly how much they could change by or how often.

9. It’s affordable for everyone

Because Sky is such a household name in the UK, it’s easy to think of it as a service that’s affordable for everyone. However, the reality is that it’s a luxury service that not everyone can justify the cost of.

10. On-demand services are easily accessible

Sky TV comes with access to TV boxsets and on-demand services such as iPlayer and 4OD. What you might not be aware of is that you need to have your Sky Hub connected to your Sky+ box in order to access theses services. This is simply not practical in many homes.
