Oak Ridge National Labs - Responsive Design

Oak Ridge National Laboratory

The Challenge
Oak Ridge National Laboratory had a very dated site that was stuck in the early 2000s. The site was text heavy and lacked focus on the great accomplishments being achieved by some of the top scientist in the country. Content for the total of the facility was managed by various groups across multiple departments and as a result the experience was inconsistent.

The Approach
Conduct stakeholder interviews for each of the various departments including C level management. Competitive analysis of similar organizations. Conduct surveys for facility users.

Observations
Due to the lab’s history and role in the Manhattan Project the perception from the community was that only top secret work was being conducted at the facility.
Stakeholders however all wanted to showcase the work being done in each department. One C level stakeholder said he wanted to showcase the scientist themselves as “Rock Star Scientist” and to create excitement about what was being accomplish at the facility.

The Solution
Designed the site to have a focus on news and discoveries that would fuel excitement around research and discoveries from the facility. Reorganize content by scientific discipline or area of interest rather than department.
